(waves hello)
I found this site after searching Google for "how long does AC contactor last" and registered specifically to ask this question.
Some Background:
I had a (reads invoice) brand-new Trane RunTru 2.5 ton AC with an ADP evaporator installed end of May beginning of June of this year. Friday night I went to turn the thermostat down and nothing happened, other than smelling a slight burning smell, so I called the installing company first thing Saturday morning and scheduled someone to come out.
After a couple of hours, the diagnosis was a burnt-out transformer in the furnace (understandable...it's 10+ years old), a bad thermostat (also understandable...it's fairly old) and a burnt-out contactor in the brand-new AC unit. I had a 10 year parts & labor warranty so the cost wasn't too bad, but it was unexpected.
The Question
I asked the technician if there was anything I could've done to prevent the contactor from failing and he said there wasn't. I'm surprised that this part failed so soon after installation...is this normal? Or, alternatively, is this normal under specific circumstances, and if so, what are those circumstances?
