Hello I am based in North Texas with a 4400 sqft two story house. Our home has 3 A/C units for different areas. The 21 year old 5 ton single stage carrier for 1st floor living area went out with a fan motor failure of the condenser. I've been getting some quotes for replacement of the whole system and had a question come up when asking about changing to variable-speed.
A contractor who has been fairly transparent/trustworthy recommended a 2 stage condenser over a variable due to the 80ft maximum refrigerant line length restriction for a variable-speed American Standard unit. The vertical length is definitely hitting close to the 25ft limit and the horizontal length would almost certainly put us over just from eyeballing it. It sounds like it'd be a hassle to run larger refrigerant line. He said he'd still do it if we wanted but wanted us to go in with eyes open that it could have issues. He likes 2-stage better because it's more simple. My questions are:
1. General opinions on 2 stage vs variable systems? We run A/C a lot due to the TX heat and I am willing to spend for comfort although I can appreciate the contractor's preference for simpler systems.
2. Anybody know offhand other manufacturer's variable systems that can tolerate longer refrigerant lines of probably 100-120+ ft?
Thank you!
