Dual-fuel installation - Thermostat wiring questions

Hello!

I currently have a single-stage gas furnace (Goodman GMES96) and an Ecobee 3 Lite (which I'd like to keep if possible). I’m going to have a single-stage heat pump (Carrier 25HHA4) installed and keep the furnace for the winter, when it gets around -20/-30°C.

I have 6 wires running from the thermostat to the control board of the furnace. My contractor told me that wasn’t enough. Running new wires is not easy in that old house, and would probably involve making some holes in the walls, but that’s the solution he offered me.

I thought I found a solution with the PEK, which would give me 7 wires on the furnace side, but my contractor says that wouldn’t do the job : “I have had some experience with the Ecobee PEK, and the configuration is generally set up for electric auxiliary heat, rather than a complete switchover to natural gas.I would recommend to have us run a new 8-conductor wire to have a proper connection.”

What's the difference between the switchover and just the auxiliary heat setting? I feel like I might be missing something.

If I indeed need 8 wires, would a Fast-stat (or equivalent product) do the job?

Thanks!
