My question is for the experts. I have a 5 ton Trane XR heat pump (14 seers 6 years old) paired with a Honeywell HZ322 zone switch for two story house. I have two Honeywell RTH 9585Wifi thermostats (they are wired into the system) I went from 23 years of gas heat to a heat pump, so it's cold air under 35 degrees. I upgraded the heat strips to 15kw. They come on when the thermostat calls for a 2 degree or above temp. The air for the strips is 120 degrees. My question is how to wire the emergency heat (strips) to the thermostat so I can switch manually on extremely cold nights. Right now it does nothing when I switch to emergency heat. My installer said it can't be wired to manually turn on the EM strips from the thermostat due to the zoning. Is there a way to do this or a workaround? I understand it costs 50 cents per hour to run the heat pump and 1.50 per hour to run the strips. I want the strips for extreme cold and to be able to manually to switch back and forth.
