I have to relocate my furnace and water heater as part of a remodel and since my system is a bit suboptimal Im exploring replacement as part of this process.
Background: New to me home 3200sq ft will be 3500 when done
1960s built original, single pane windows etc - (will be addressed at some point)
Coastal Northern California climate, cool and mild weather (dips into high 30s during the really cold nights but typically our winter lows are in the high 40s) summers we get 20 days over 90. Basically heater gets run 100 days a year, AC 15 days a year. This being California both gas and electricity are very expensive. Gas bills are running about $350 a month to keep the house 66/67 degrees, I do have 8k of solar on the roof so electrical has an advatage.
Current setup is an older Trane 120k btu xe80 (80% efficiency) works fine but definitely a gas hog. Air conditioner is a 4ton older trane unit
Had several local HVAC techs come out and they are recommending everything from heat pumps to dual fuel systems to a new gas furnace. Given I have a million of other things to fix in this house (like the aforementioned single pane aluminum windows) Im extremely budget conscious but also dont want to be penny wise pound foolish here.
Which setup seems best for my use case? Any specific models I should be looking at. Or just work on windows and insulation and stick to what I got?
