Hi, I'm interested in switching to a smart thermostat and was hoping to get some advice from experts on what the best options would be for my setup. I don't know much about HVAC systems, so apologies if I get some things wrong in my post!
My place currently has two separate HVAC systems each with a heat pump, backup furnace, and timer-based ventilation system. Each has its own Honeywell thermostat which is wired to a Honeywell equipment interface module. The attached images show one of the systems, the other is similar except the thermostat is in a bedroom while the EIM, furnace, etc are in the attic.
I think I'd like to accomplish the following:
A few questions for you all:
Really appreciate any advice! Without knowing much about HVAC systems, it's really hard for me to tell what does/doesn't apply for me when searching around so far. Thanks in advance!

I think I'd like to accomplish the following:
- Replace with smart thermostats which I can control from my phone, especially since the thermostats are kind of out of the way
- Hook up ventilation to the thermostat so it can be remotely controlled. My understanding is that some thermostats will automatically draw in cool outside air rather than run the AC when applicable. Plus climbing into the attic to shutoff ventilation during the west coast wildfires this summer was a little annoying.
- I read that some newer thermostats can run a heat pump to reduce indoor humidity. There's a couple months of the year where that might be nice here.
- There are some hard-wired temperature sensors that hook up to the existing thermostat which I assume helps to more evenly heat across floors.
A few questions for you all:
- I think this means I'd need to swap out that Duro Dyne controller, what would be an appropriate replacement?
- What sort of thermostat would you recommend? I've read good things about the Ecobee, but I'm concerned that the existing wiring through the walls to the bedroom will be a problem since it's set up for the EIM at the moment. Should I consider a Honeywell smart thermostat instead?
Really appreciate any advice! Without knowing much about HVAC systems, it's really hard for me to tell what does/doesn't apply for me when searching around so far. Thanks in advance!
