I have 15 yo Trane 5 ton unknown SEER and such, heat pump.
I have about 5 yo Honeywell t stat.
Question.
When Heat runs on - we keep it at 68 - system turns on then, in about 30 seconds of operation, Aux heat runs on, for another about minute or so. Thereafter, t stat returns to "following schedule" and normal no heat strips operation.
It is currently in high 40s outside, even during the night.
Why is Aux heat engaging?
In t stat set up, 0170, what is system setup, it is set to 7, what is 1 heat/1 cool (auxiliary heat). If I set it to 0170>1> 1 heat/1 cool, what is no aux heat and factory default, system will not turn on.
I do not see any reason, at such high ambient, for heat strips to come up. It appears that, it simply turns them on to quickly reach warmer air and, then returns to heat pump only operation.
Heat strips are costly to run.
Recommendations? Can I simply disconnect white wire from Aux terminal WITHOUT damaging anything? It's been cursed year, anything I touch breaks or goes bad otherwise.
