Problem reinstalling old registers

Hi, odd/stupid question here :/

I removed and re-painted the registers in my 1928 home, but am having a nightmare trying to reinstall them. (My son removed them, and unfortunately he doesn't remember how things were oriented.)

Here's the setup...

The problem is: I can't tell if the lip of the duct sheet metal should sit in front of the register frame or be tucked behind it.

For example, in the photo here, you can see the lip of the metal (green arrow) is coming through the opening in the frame (blue arrow). While it "seems" like this is correct (there are even cutouts in the sheet metal where the screws go in at the top), it also seems like having this metal come through the frame and rest on the face of the frame...that the louver portion now won't sit flush as it's sitting on the sheet metal. The alternative is to bend the lips of the sheet metal outward and tuck it behind the frame. I really can't tell which way is correct.

If it helps, here's a better pic of the lip of the sheet metal...thanks in advance for your help.
