My old house used to have a single 20 x 25 return in wall (using wall cavity as return duct). I just hired a contractor to have it closed, and replaced with 4 x returns in ceiling (1 in living room/hallway, 1 in each bedroom).
The contractor also installed media filter for me at the furnace (in attic). The size is 20 x 25 x 4 (Honeywell 2200 with Honeywell FC100A1037 20 x 25 x 4 MERV 11 media filter).
I'd want to avoid changing multiple filters at return grilles, so the plan is to use this single media filter. But I just read some articles online which used the "minimum 2 sqft filter area per 400 CFM" rule. Per that calculation, I should have 600 sqft of filter area for my 3-ton AC unit, but 20 x 25 is only 500.
My understanding is that the 4" media filter is less restrictive than my old 1" filter. Do you think the single 20x25x4 Honeywell MERV11 media filter would be okay in my case?
