Do I need two filter sets?

I recently moved into a house (built in the 60s but the HVAC was replaced probably in the last 10-20 years) and found two different places where filters are installed. We have replaceable filters where the air is pulled in from the house, set into the ceiling. I later discovered we also have filters in a metal box directly above the furnace/fan in the garage. It seems redundant to have both but maybe I’m missing something? Wondering if I can just remove the set right above the heating unit.
