I purchased this house a little over a year ago. Every time the weather cools off and I start to use the furnace for the winter there is this horrible smell. Not the smell you get when you first turn the furnace on for the first time. This smell is something different. The best way I can describe this is it smells like industrial oil or rubber burning. The smell is making me ill. I get headaches, my throat burns, my eyes water, my nose constantly runs! I have had a heating and cooling company come out 4 times to look at this furnace. They told me that the furnace was running too hot, and they told me that installing another cold air return along with 5 more vents would take care of this issue. Well, guess what...I had the vents and cold air returns installed and it did not resolve my issue. The weather has cooled off this year a bit early and the smell is back again, and no one can tell me why. No one can figure out what is wrong with this furnace. I have lived in many homes before, but I have never had a furnace in any of them that leaked this liquid out of a PVC pipe. The rust that comes out of this pipe is bad and forms a puddle on my floor around this drain in my floor. There is something wrong with this furnace and I can't seem to find a company in my area that can locate the problem and fix it for me. I did some online research and apparently, there was a class-action lawsuit against Carrier on their high-efficiency furnace units. So I am posting here on this forum to see if someone might know what would cause this industrial burnt oil or rubber smell with my furnace. Please help! Any and all feedback will be appreciated! My model number on this furnace is CNPUP3617ACAACAA. The name of the furnace is Carrier Comfort 92.
