Question about Deflector in basement drop ceiling.

Hello Everyone.

This is my first post. I did some searches in order to find what I am looking for but I did not find it. Most likely because I am not exactly sure what keywords to use.

We purchased a house that has a basement with a drop ceiling. It is just now getting cooler here in AL so we just turned on the heat after having the unit serviced.

The basment has Hart & Cooley RENPS 24x24 vents installed in the main area. They have a perforated steel face and a deflector. I noticed that I really couldn't feel any air coming into the room where these are installed. I can feel heat but only when I put my hand an inch or so away. The deflector (odd name for what it is) is just a flat piece of metal that seems to do more Stopping than Deflecting. I took one down and without it I feel what I guess is good air flow since I did not have an air flow test done. In the unfinished area, the ductwork is exposed and I get what feels like the same amount of air flowing. It is nice and toasty in there. The main area is ~900 sq ft and the unfinished but still heated area is about 700. The main area is partially underground (walkout) if that matters with 1 window and 1 door. I do not feel any cold air coming in.

I have no idea how old these panels are and if they are old tech. Maybe there is something better now.

Would it do any harm to replace these with the type that have no deflectors? Or remove them? Will it harm the gas furnace? I plan to temporarily remove the other 2 in the main room for a few days and see if it makes a difference. If removing them makes a difference and does no harm, I can remove the metal plate.

We were hear for a while last winter and were settling in. It was noticeably cooler in the main area vs the unfinished area. I never checked into then with so much other stuff going on.

Thanks
Brian
