Our 2-floor CAC was new 12 years ago (2 Ruud condensers) and maybe serviced once since then, but I clean the "lifetime" filter at the return (1 return/filter for both floors) every year. I also replaced the capacitor for the 1st floor condenser when the fan stopped spinning last year and all was well again all through this summer.
One day suddenly last week when it was only 85F outside, the 1st floor was just blowing warm air (~3F delta T). 2nd floor CAC has no issues being cold. Called a reputable AC company and for diagnostic, he 1) checked refrigerant levels (said 1-2 lbs needed), 2) washed out the condenser unit, and 3) washed out the filter. He refilled 2lbs of refrigerant and it blew cold again at the vents (~15F delta T) for like 30 minutes of use after and I shut it off.
Hadn't used it again until yesterday when it was 85F outside and 1st floor blew warm air again. 2nd floor is still fine. If it's not the refrigerant and everything else is clean, what else could it be and was what they did for diagnostic the proper way to do things? If it's losing refrigerant, shouldn't their first step have been to find the leak?
I'm out $ and still have warm air right now (70F outside, 77F inside, 75F blowing at the vent).
