Weve gotten several bids back for our furnace replacement all from long-standing, highly-reputable companies and the unit sizes they recommend are all different. Everything I can find online says that tonnage is based on BTUs but apparently you can get a 3T, 4T, or 5T with 90K BTUs. So, does the tonnage matter at all?
Our existing furnace is a single stage 80% 4T with 80k BTU and the bids weve gotten for replacement (moving up to a HE 95% 2-stage, variable) are:
3T 90k
4T 100k
5T 80k
They have all come out to the same house, how can the recommendations be so different?
It all leaves me wondering how much either number matters. I just dont want to end up with a furnace that wont meet our needs or wastes energy.
Other info: 3-story, East facing, 2480 sq/ft home with 13 registers and 2 returns in a temperate zone. We have a 3T A/C that was installed 3 years ago.
