Hello,
My 14 y/o Carrier Infinity condenser stopped working recently. HVAC technician assessed and showed me how mice had chewed away wires to compressor right at entrance into that part so could not be rewired (there was obvious activity from mice in the condenser). HVAC company said it would cost about as much to replace the entire condenser as replacing the compressor so he gave me an initial quote for repair which said: "replace condenser unit S#0437 with one Bryant M# 113ANA036." I scheduled the work and I was told they would order the parts. However, a couple of weeks later I was strangely re-quoted by email for an entire system- complete condenser and air-handler. I called HVAC company and spoke with the owner who said his guy made a mistake because the Bryant condenser he quoted me would not be compatible with the Carrier Infinity System secondary to the computerized communications between the Infinity condenser, air-handler, and thermostat/control unit. He said pricing a new replacement Carrier Infinity condenser would be as expensive as getting a entire new non-Infinity system and so he quoted me an entire new 13 SEER non-Infinity system (which he noted would give me a 10 year warranty). So this job to replace a failed compressor has grown to replacing the condenser to replacing the entire system (condenser/air-handler/controller) with a very large price tag.
Needless to say, I am not happy that a failing compressor replacement has somehow morphed into replacement of an entire system with a huge price tag. With his acknowledgement that he could not replace the Carrier Infinity condenser alone, I am not sure why he did not simply offer me repair of the Infinity condenser by replacing the compressor. That would seem to be the most cost-effective solution. I do not expect to be in this home more than another three years (which I told him) and so I do not want to invest more than I have to into this repair.
From the sticker on my Carrier Infinity condenser, the model number is 24ANA736A300.
Before I contact my HVAC company and ask him about replacing the compressor alone, I would like to know what other professionals think about this and is there anything I am missing or should consider. Is there another condenser unit for less money that is compatible with the Carrier Infinity system? Is replacing the compressor alone the best way to go? Does this HVAC company's quotes and their rationale seem reasonable? Is this just a classic upsell?
Thank you.
