Hi, hoping to get some opinions here since I've gotten two different opinions from several different HVAC companies that came out. I currently have a split system (AC/Furnace) with a 3-ton Goodman unit for the basement and first floor and a 3-ton air handler and 2.5 ton Goodman condenser for the second and third floors.
For the basement/1st floor unit I have an Aprilaire filter at the return plenum that runs to the 1st floor living room and a second Aprilaire filter at the return vent in the basement (they are on two separate ducts that both run into the furnace return) - everything seems to be working great
For the 2nd floor/3rd floor, I have had struggles with low/uneven airflow - partially due to a crappy install job (shocking right). We have for the most part made it better by pulling slack out of the flex ducts in the attic and replacing some flex with metal duct.
My question is, what is preferred for the return or does it make a difference? Currently, there is a single 1-inch filter at the plenum - which we know is not good. One company said we should remove the single filter at the plenum and instead install a filter at each of the return vents. We have 3 returns on the 3rd floor (two 14X14 returns in two separate bedrooms and one 14X30 in the ceiling at the top of the stairs) and 1 return on the second floor (one 14X14 in the primary bedroom). The other company tells me that having a filter at each vent is a bad setup and instead we should have a single aprilare filter at the plenum. It seems to me that the first option might be less restrictive? I would like to run a higher MERV filter in either case.
thoughts are appreciated!
