Moved into brand new construction condo.. Three months ago, system (Heat Pump on Roof + Air Handler in ceiling in my unit) was not cooling well. Delta T was around 15 degrees. Went up to roof and noticed that the smaller liquid line was covered in frost (the larger liquid line was not covered in ice).
HVAC tech came out, checked system and said refrigerant was low. He added 3 pounds to the system (Holds 6.6 lbs). I asked why the refrigerant was this low and he said they may have not properly charged it when it was installed. After he added refrigerant the Delta T improved to 26 degrees. 3 months later, Delta T is still 26 degrees and cooling performance is still good.
However, I noticed that the suction line (larger copper pipe) connected to the Heat Pump is now covered in frost (see photo)
The key difference now is that Delta T is still good at 26 degrees and this time the larger suction line is covered in frost/ice whereas before the smaller liquid line was covered in frost/ice.
Does this indicate a refrigerant leak or could it be a different issue?
Please advise.. Thank you.
