Dampening with single stage compressor

Hello, I have been getting a lot of mixed information. I need my zone dampening system and my coils replaced. The compressor has already been replaced with Amana single stage 14 seer system. The first technician that came out gave me a quote to replace the zone dampening system, coils and the gas furnace just because it's old. He said that with a variable speed motor there should be no problems with how the system is set up. However the second guy that came out said I needed a two-stage compressor otherwise it could cause damage to the compressor and evaporator because of the possibility of it freezing due to less airflow through the evaporator by the variable speed motor when only cooling the upstairs or downstairs. My issue is the single stage compressor is brand new and I can't really afford to buy a two-stage.

So I have two options installing the zone dampening system with a single stage compressor or don't install the dampening system and get something like a Google nest. And then maybe control the air flow from the receptacles? I heard that's not very effective though. I'm just afraid if I bypassed the zone dampening system I'll have a drastic temperature change upstairs versus downstairs.

If anyone else has better options or just information I would appreciate it.

Michael
