I am thinking about replacing my 20 year old Trane 3 ton XR 12 AC soon. It is near 3 decks in the rear of my house and noise is a concern. The XR 12 has always made a loud "clang" sound at start up and the fan is a bit noisy as well and has always been. I am considering a Trane replacement and with an XR14, XR 16 or XL16i. All the units list a sound rating in decibels but I have never been to find any sound rating for my old unit so it is hard to compare. If anyone is familiar with the old XR 12 and any of the newer models and could provide some sound (noise) comparisons that would be appreciated.
