Apologies if this is a long post. I'm a first time homeowner with a one year old Carrier 3 ton 14 SEER heat pump (model 25HCE) and Carrier Edge thermostat . This is my second summer in the home. The home is a new build, 3-story townhouse that is 2,000 sq feet including a two car garage. Last summer I had no issues with my air conditioning. It is still under the builder's warranty, and repairs are made by his HVAC contractor.
Three weeks ago, it was not cooling. The tech said the charge was low/it was low on refrigerant and topped it off. Checked twice since then for leaks/low charge, and it has been normal. They said if it was installed in cool weather, it may not have been properly charged in the first place.
Now, I've noticed it is cooling fine but the condenser fan stays on all the time despite the thermostat being set to auto-fan. Is this normal?
When the condenser is on and cooling the home, the thermostat says "2 Cool On." When the set temperature is reached (I have it set between 72-74), and the condenser cycles off, I still hear the fan blowing and the thermostat says, "Cool On." It's my understanding this system has two-stage heating but one-stage cooling. The tech said it has a two-stage fan. All of this is greek to me. Any insight is appreciated. I have been changing my filter every 30 days, using a fiberglass filter to put less strain on return air, covered all windows with blinds and curtains, keeping all vents open, and am getting draft stoppers for my closet, but I'm worried there is still something wrong with my system. Three of my neighbors have the same house layout/sq. footage, heatpump, etc. and they haven't noticed their fans blowing nonstop.
Additionally, when the thermostat is set to cooling, I only have the option for the fan to be on autofan-- I no longer have the option to keep the fan set to on. I don't recall this being the case last summer. Last summer, I kept the fan on all the time as I had just moved in and the HVAC tech recommended it to clear construction dust from the ducts.
