I have a 26 year old Carrier AC unit with a compressor that wont start up. When dropping the temperature on the thermostat to start the AC, the condenser fan starts and runs continuously with no problem. But the compressor attempts to start initially for about 1 second and cannot, then every minute I hear a short 1 second rumbling from the compressor attempting to start but it still cannot start, therefore there is no cooling.
Does this sound like the compressor is shot or a simpler problem such as bad capacitor or contactor?
If bad compressor, not sure if it would be worthwhile replacing on this old unit?
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
