Can supply temp tell you if heat pump is operating in variable speed mode?

Hi.

I've been trying to get an Ecobee to work via a Daikin DKN interface (cloud-->cloud), while ensuring I don't lose the variable speed functionality of the unit. TBH, I only wanted this configuration before I realized the Daikin thermostats are communicating units. If I had known that from the start, I wouldn't have pestered the installer about the Ecobee and simply went with the Daikin One+. Live and learn.

Fast forward and everything's installed now, but I’m trying to figure out if it’s working the way a Daikin One+ would work. Daikin tech support is telling my guy that the setup should work without losing any functionality (particularly the variable speed aspect of the unit) and that it's property installed and working as it should.

This is our unit:

I'm not sure how it's all wired up, but I do know that we've got a BRC controller in the mix.

Before the BRC, the unit was clearly short-cycling, Basically it would turn on for 15 or 20 minutes (sometimes as long as 30 minutes, sometimes shorter, but mostly 15 or 20 minutes) and then turn off for 15 or 20 minutes. Rinse and repeat. Outdoor temperature was between 4 and 4.5 degrees Celsius.

After the BRC, things definitely improved. At an outside temperature today of between 7.5 degrees and 13 degrees Celsius, it is now running for between 45 minutes and as long as an hour (sometimes it runs shorter than 45 minutes, but mostly ~45 minutes) and then shuts off for 45 - 55 minutes. When it's running, peak output at the supply grille is ~34 degrees Celsius.

My question is: Is it obvious that the heat pump is functioning in variable speed mode?

I thought these things were supposed to pretty much operate 24 hours/day (within reason) when calling for heat. I'm pretty sure the unit is oversized, but could it be THAT oversized (I know the answer here is going to be "yes"!").

Basically, I'm wondering whether I should ask my guy to start from scratch, replacing the DKN, Ecobee and BRC with a Daikin One+ (all at my cost), although I'm worried that won't help with the short cycling.

The other thing that makes me wonder is the temperature steadily rises by ~1/2 degree above the set point for the ~45 minutes or so it's on, after which it steadily falls to 1/2 degree below the set point, only to do it all over again. I would have thought you would have seen more variability in the ~45 minute period the heat pump was on, but is it possible it's producing as little heat as it possibly can? Does the ~34 degrees Celsius it puts out give any clues as to whether that's at full throttle (or maybe some sort of "Stage 2" rather than truly variable)?

Thoughts/comments?

Thanks!
