This is my first post - so go easy on me.
My house is about 20 years old, and has a 3 zone system with central air and heating. The zones are handled by dampers that adjust to whichever zone needs heat or cooling.
The 3 thermostats are on the main floor, the upstairs master bedroom, and in the finished lower level (basement). Functionally, they all work fine.
The 3 thermostats are just the standard round thermostats. The main floor thermostat has the switches for fan (on/off) and heat/cool, so nothing is automatic or programmable at all. This is the same set of thermostats that were installed when the house was built. The other 2 thermostats have no switches, just the circular dial to set the desired temp.
A few issues that arise are that during the winter, we keep the basement cold, so perhaps I have it set to 63-65. Then when it warms up in spring and we turn on the A/C, now its cranking all the cooling to the basement until I remember to set that way up to avoid cooling the basement. Then the same issue arises again when we switch to heating and now its sending heat to the basement. So obviously I should get a wifi-enabled, programmable set of thermostats, and join the 21st century. But which one to get? I don't want to spend **** buying 3 separate fancy programmable thermostats and have to set each one up independently. Also, since the master bedroom and basement are just the simple round with no switches, would they even have the right wires to install a better thermostat?
My idea scenario would be the replace the main floor with a master - and the basement and upstairs are just slave thermostats, which I can program with my phone via wifi, or even better, the main thermostat can be used to program all 3 zones from the same place. Any of this make sense? Any suggestions?
