Hi all. When it comes to HVAC, I'm out of my depth and have the following situation and seeking some guidance
I currently have a 6 year old 3.5 Ton 14 Seer Ruud RA1442CJ1NA AC unit with an Aspen CH48A34-000 coil and a 20 year old Bryant furnace. Two years ago, I had a cooling problem, the unit was low on Freon. The HVAC contractor added Freon and recommended replacing the coil because it seemed to have a very slow leak. However, once he added the Freon, all was fine so I did not replace the 4 year old coil.
Yesterday, the same thing happened, but this time, a new technician visited, the Freon was even lower than what it was 2 years ago and recommended replacing the entire system with an Armstrong 4 ton 16 SEER single stage gas furnace, condenser and evaporator coil. To my untrained eyes, I'm struggling with having to replace a 6 year old system. Also, my house is 1600 square feet. Do I need a 16 SEER system when my usage has been fine with the 14 SEER? Any thought or guidance? Any opinions on the Armstrong unit? Before replacing a 6 year old AC unit, should I replace the coil only?
I'm in the process of getting 3 quotes. However, I'm trying to "absorb" as much information as possible to make an informed decision.
