Is anyone familiar with Sawafuji compressors fitted to Engel Fridges?
I've got an Engel fridge, used daily in my SUV as I often commute long distances. The unit gave some problems a while ago (low on refrigerant) and due to limited time I've sent the unit for a service to a third party rather than to attend to it myself. The unit was returned stating that it couldn't be repaired as the compressor is faulty, however, the unit did work prior to the service and managed to freeze the contents although not as quickly as before.
I've started to tinker with the unit yesterday after it sat for a couple of weeks. It started right up, quickly covered the evaporator in ice, and after about 5 minutes it stopped functioning. I recovered the R134a (which was overcharged) and also noticed a lot of oil present within the compressor. Testing with an open system gave me proper head and suction side readings, thus the compressor seems functional. Tested the rest of the system and found the capillary tube clogged with oil. Quick flush, reassembled, and ran it for a few minutes when cooling stopped yet again. Cracked the system open and yet more oil in the capillary tube blocking the flow of refrigerant.
I have yet to drain the oil to measure the volume, but from all the info I could find online, it would seem these units are self-lubricating. Not sure of the exact science behind this or how this is achieved but no mention of the compressors containing oil in all the research I've done. The compressor construction also indicates internal suction ports situated very low within the compressor, thus any oil would be sucked up within an instant.
Can anyone confirm if these units do need oil, and perhaps also confirm the viscosity? The system is tiny (smallest I've ever worked on) and the small capillary tube would never allow oil to pass through it IMO.
