Enlarge Heat Register Opening Or Not?

I have a finished basement with 7'-9" ceiling and 500 sq. ft area.
The room has two returns in walls at the floor on opposite ends of the room tied into the return air trunk.
The ductwork is boxed out and finished in drywall.
There are two heat registers attached to the trunk with 6" diameter register boots and 6"X12" grilles.
The outside walls are insulated.
The room temperature is always at least 5 degrees cooler than the upstairs temp. of 68 degrees.
My question is:
If I removed the register boots and enlarged the duct opening to match the register size (6"X12") would that help and provide more heat?
The furnace is providing 1100 cfm
Do I need more register?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you all.
