Hi All,
Long time lurker, first time caller. My wife and I purchased a home last July in Northern Virginia. Its a cape cod that was built in 1952. Its a little over 2,500 square feet, a little over 1,000 sf of finished conditioned space in the walk out basement and first floors, and a little over 500 sf on the second floor.
The house has a 3 ton Carrier 38TKB036 a/c unit that is 24 years old and a 110,000 BTU Carrier 58STA 80% furnace that is 12 years old. Its clear the prior owners had trouble keeping the second floor cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Instead of replacing the existing system, they installed an LG mini split system in each of the two upstairs bedrooms. While the bedrooms stay relatively comfortable the bathroom is completely unconditioned, despite having a register to the main system.
We expect to replace the current furnace/ac unit this spring. Would you recommend keeping the existing mini split in place or install a new system that conditions all three levels.
Thanks.
