Hi. I am getting quotes to move the register in my bedroom and trying to assess which professional is giving me the best option. The current register extends from the hallway trunkline (20"x6" hard duct) from a 16"x6" branch that extends only a few feet from the trunk to the register in the bedroom wall. The trunk is supplied with 14" flex duct. I want to remove and cap the 16"x6" branch and replace that wall register with a ceiling register at the far end of the bedroom 15-20' distance from trunkline. I think the best advice I am receiving is to install a wye connector in the 14" flex supply, and then run flex duct to the new ceiling register which makes sense to me. The question is what size flex to run. The current setup does fine in terms of heating/cooling so I am wanting to basically match the same amount of airflow to the bedroom as the current design. I think the equivalent flex size to the 16"x6" rectangular branch is between 10" and 12" which I think means I should go with a 12" flex duct and maybe even put in a damper to regulate the flow at the wye. I have contractors telling me a 10" flex is good enough, which doesn't make sense to me since I think I want at least the same area as the 16"x6" (96 sq in) and a 10" flex is almost 20% smaller in area and will span a longer distance too. I don't want to go too small and get less flow than currently getting. Hope this makes sense. This is my first post and I am pretty green when it comes to HVAC talk. :)
