We are sufferring from a bad smell in our downstairs system and have been since Sept. 2020. We've had all kinds of work done on the equipment, the next step is determine whether the ducts or the equipment are responsible.
How should we go about doing that?
My current HVAC company, the one that just installed a 2 UV coil lamps (to no effect), wants to disconnect the entire return plenum and attach a temporary one with ducts that run out of the attic, in order to check if the return ductwork is the cause. They want to leave this setup in place for 2 days. But is this the best approach?
I ask because they want to charge me an arm and a leg for it. So high, in fact, was the quote, that I doubt they really want to do the work. So now I doubt the effectiveness of the proposed test.
If you needed to determine whether the source of a smell is ductwork or equipment, how do you go about doing it, using temporary ducts like my company suggests, or something different?
