Hello, I moved into a new construction home a few months back that has forced heat and central A/C. The home is a raised ranch with open concept between basement/2nd floor. The home is very well insulated. The basement is half finished with the furnace being located on the unfinished side. There is a door separating the finished/unfinished side of the basement. The home has 1 zone on the second floor and like most homes like this, we are dealing with the basement, warm second floor issue. The supply registers on the second floor are in the floors with an air return in the main hallway floor. In the basement, the supply registers are in the ceiling with an air return register in the ceiling near the stair case, opposite of any supply registers. See attached pictures for the return set up as well as furnace.
Question: Would it make a big difference moving the basement air return from the ceiling to closer to the floor? Shouldn't it be sucking up the cold air on the floor? When you walk in the basement, you can feel the heat above your head sitting on the ceiling. I understand its never going to be perfect with 1 zone but I think right now, the return air vent in the basement is just sucking the warm air back into it. I use the furnace fan on circulate which seems to help.
