Ion Controllers and Sense power monitor.

A year ago, I replaced an 11y/o propane furnace and 5 ton R22 A/C. The old unit was a low end builders model tossed in the house to finish off quickly during the 2008 housing crash.

The new unit is a Day&Night CVH860 heat pump with a modulating propane gas furnace.
This system is controlled by an Ion SYST0101CW system controller (smart thermostat). One of the nice features that I liked is the energy tracking and logging. I also have a Sense power monitor installed on the main circuit breaker to the whole house. It uses CT taps and sends power data to the cloud. It is cool in that you can monitor power usage in real time or look back more then a year of recorded data. It is really neat to watch the HVAC startup and shutdown or make adjustments during the day.

When the Ion power monitor feature was working; I could say it was spot on! Its data correlated well with the Sense power monitor. But that feature was too good to last! A fricken software upgrade degraded that feature about 10 months ago. (Thank you ICP). I was able to figure out a work around for the power monitor feature; realizing the usage was off by a factor of 10 and days of the week were swapped. Gas usage data was still accurate and wasn't affected except for the day of week.

My HVAC man did a great job of selecting a system for my home. I know that he is a little nervous about knowing how to maintain these communicating systems. I can see where the HVAC guy is going to need to bone up on his computer and electronic skills.

I don't think the energy logging is an insignificant feature. It is a part of the “Energy Star” certification program. If this feature doesn't work; then pressure should be placed on the manufacture. I am pissed at ICP for crappy piss poor software regression testing.

I realize that my return on investment could be made within five years with the new system. I would have loved to make that case for my HVAC man. But that data is now tainted due to a software bug.

This is my first post on this forum. I been coming here often to learn. Retired so not interested in working!!!!:putergreet:
