Goodman heat pump blows cold during defrost- fixed

IÂ’m registered here itÂ’s a DIY but are used to be 608 certified and still hold the 609 certification having worked with AC for many years. I also call electrical engineering degree and I have actually worked in that field for the majority of my life. That being said I really consider myself a DIY because I am not working on residential systems for sometime now unless it is my own system.

Five years ago I installed a Goodman 4 ton 16 seer 2 stage heat pump and blower and a communicating thermostat (comfortnet) And besides a couple small issues it works pretty flawless and provides great performance and both hot and cold weather.

Recently we had a cold snap with the temps dropping down in the high 20s. I believe it was 28°. Sitting in my kitchen late one night (pretty much under the vent) with the heat pump running with the thermostat set at 68°, everything was fine. Then I felt a blast of cold air on the back of my neck. I get up and look outside to see the heat pump fan is not running Soooooo i Listen carefully near the window by the heat pump and I’m sure I can hear the outside compressor running so I know I’m in defrost mode. I Check the air vent temperature with my hand and sure enough, it’s cold and feeling colder.

I look at the thermostat and it shows me I’m on stage one heat with the outside temperature reading at 32° And inside temperature at 68, with the blower fan on. No Auxiliary Heating indicator is shown but to be honest I couldn’t recall whether or not I should see that flashing in defrost mode or if that only comes on when I go to the EMERGENCY HEAT mode.

I heard the outside unit reversing valve change and the outside condenser fan comes on and IÂ’m back into heat pump mode. I feel vent temp with my hand and sure enough IÂ’m starting to produce heat again

I know my system used to switch to auxiliary heaters in defrost mode but now it obviously wasnÂ’t. So I pull out all the manuals, schematics and reference material on my system and start reading through it. Also I go on Google and searched the exact topic heading that I have used on this post and I found several posts and even a post on this website with lots of suggestions and lots of requests for specific information from the pros which I read through. But even though there were numerous posts about this problem and numerous suggestions I did not find a single thread that had a solution.

So I went back to the installation manuals and other reference material. I had to try to solve the problem. It got late so i went to bed and continued troubleshooting the next morning.

The next morning the sun came up and the outside temp started rising. I look at my little WeatherStation that’s next to my bed there’s an outside sensor which is about 15 feet from the outside heat pump and it’s reading 34°. I get out of bed can I go downstairs look at the thermostat and I see heat pump is running, temperature set at 68 but the outside temperature on the tstat is reading 37°. Now I know that ever since I had this heat pump that the outside temperature listed on the thermostat never matched the temperature on my weather station. They were always a few degrees off and I attributed that to the fact that my weather station is one of those cheap Chinese weather stations that you get off Alibaba for 20 bucks and figured it wasn’t all that accurate. Also the weather station sensor wasnt near the heatpump. I pulled up the weather app and that gave me also another different temperature but then again I don’t know where the weather app thermometer is stationed and since I’m up on the hill my outside temp never matched the weather station temp.

So I run and grab my wireless barbecue grill temperature probe and I go on a stick near the heat pump and I grab the sensor off the wall for the weather station and I put them all back behind the heat pump to check the temperatures. And of course all three temperatures were different by several degrees. You know they say - a man with two thermometers never knows what temperature it actually is outside.

I went back to my reading material to try to find where the thermocouple is for the heat pump and of course there is no actual component locator and anything I have itÂ’s just shows that the wires for the thermal couple for the outside air temperature attached to the heat pump control board and go through the wall of the heat pump in a fashion similar to that of the coil thermostat so IÂ’m thinking that maybe they stuck The outside air temperature thermocouple couple on the inside of the chassis and that would explain why my temperatures never matched.

I just had some company show up so I will finish the story in a little bit
