Now that we've been touching the 20F and occasionally hitting 0F in the DC/MD/VA area the last few years, I can only wonder...what is truly a solid performing heat pump model/brand that produce some decent heat? Most heat pumps nowadays do a decent job of cooling and I know SEER and HSPF refer to cooling and heating efficiencies, but which brands are capable of actually warming a house well?
Our previous Trane XL13i and VS blower did ok and our 3-year old Lennox XP14 with VS blower does less well with heating (still way underwhelmed with Lennox; below 35F, Lennox is horrible). Surely, there's an all-electric heat pump that heats better nowadays. Someone, please tell me which ones/types to seriously consider. There's way too much emphasis on efficiency ratings (25 SEER and 10.0 HSPF being better than 16 SEER and 9.5 HSPF units).
While overemphasized, there really isn't much difference between those ratings when comparing annual cost and I don't care about saving $100 a year by spending $5 grand more for an "upgraded" system. Sure, ideally I'd welcome efficiency AND cozy heat, but the common heat pumps I've witnessed have a long way to go.
Please tell me what's available and what's coming that might offer some significant heating improvements. Or, do I just need to budget and plan on burying a large propane tank for supplemental heat?
Thanks for your thoughts!
