I have a Lennox G71MPP furnace and the Honeywell TH9421 thermostat that was installed with it stopped working recently. I purchased an Ecobee Smart Thermostat as a replacement and had the service technician install it when he came to check the Honeywell. Now I am reading about my furnace and it’s capabilities and wondering if we are actually reaping the benefits. The furnace manual says it is capable of operating in variable capacity mode with a two stage thermostat. However, it seems there is also a communicating mode that works only with Lennox communicating thermostats. From what the service company tells me the communicating thermostat is the Lennox iComfort S30. What more do I get by using a communicating thermostat over the Ecobee? When I asked the service company they just sent me the brochure for the S30 which doesn’t really explain any differences. The reason I ask is that the price they quoted me for the S30 is 2.5x the cost of the Ecobee and the reviews of the mobile app and smart features seem to be very poor. I’m trying to determine what, if any, benefits it would provide to see if it justifies the significant additional cost.
