I feel bad posting this question as there is so much information in the forum regarding whole home dehumidifiers.
We live in a 2 story 2725 sqft home in the west Houston area. The upstairs has a 2 ton unit( I suspect this is oversized slightly) and a 3 ton downstairs; both are single stage units. The home is an energy star home and is typically kept with the thermostats in the 72-74F range during the day but like it cold (around 68F) at night. Due my youngest have fairly severe allergies the doctors have recommended the house be kept between 45-50 percent humidity year round. In the summer at full tilt both the units running gets the humidity in to the 52-56% range. On days like today where outdoor humidity is around 75% and the temp is around 68 the downstairs will creep in to the 55% range and the upstairs into the 61-63% range. I don't think either unit has run more than about 4 hours in the last 18 hours and the home is still about 71 from last night.
It is days like today where we would like a whole home dehumidifier to help with the humidity levels but I am not sure on sizing. If I look at the Ultra-Aire 120H unit, it looks to be the one that is likely correct? The engineer side of me what to know as much as I can so as I engage our HVAC contractor I have some idea of how to have an intelligent conversation and know if I need to second guess him or not as we look at this issue. Any information you can provide to "educate" me would be appreciated and likewise I will supply any information I can as needed.
