Hello,
We had a HVAC system installed in our slab foundation house - all ducts/supply registers are in attic/ceiling.
The contractor installed a return at the bottom of the wall, using two 2x4 cavities, in a load bearing wall - with notches cut out on the top plate.
I've had a few people tell me i should add extra studs, for structural integrity, but that will in turn decrease the size of the return air cavity.
Now the actual question... since the notch/hole cut on top plate is of a particular size, i don't think it matters if i decrease the size of the return air. There is only so much air that will go through the notch, so i'm thinking making the cavity smaller will have no negative effect... I just wanted to confirm if that logic is correct.
I do have some 3d diagrams below to hopefully explain what i'm considering.
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
