Hi Everyone,
I'm a home owner, and and trying to figure things out. I just built a house and have a few questions. I live in Minnesota incase it matters, and my house is a 1 story with a basement (soon to be finished basement)
My last house I built, an HRV was installed. It was ducted to the main HVAC ducting system (not sure how it was setup). the system I think auto ran 20 minutes each our. It sucked air out from every room, and vented it outside, and pulled fresh air, and supplied it to each room. I could press a button and turn it off, or make it run constant low speed or constant high speed. The bathrooms had exhaust fans that were independent and not tied to that system. any air these fans blew out, makeup air would just pull into the basement through that duct thing that went up through the roof of the house.
My new house I built uses an ERV. This system is setup much different. it only sucks air out from the bathrooms, and I think it supplies it to every room using the HVAC system vents or something. This system is off, and only runs if I press the button in one of the bathrooms. I can have it run for 20 min, 40 min, or 1 hour.
I understand that ERV systems recover some of the humidity level of the home. So I'm trying to follow. HRV systems the exhaust and the intake air are completely separate and never mix, and an ERV system mixes the air some, and aren't completely separate?
I like the thought of stale air being pulled out of every room, but I also like that the bathroom fans makeup air is pre-warmed or cooled depending on how you look at it I guess.
So i guess my questions are as follows.
1) is my understanding above with hrv vs erv correct with the mixing of air?
2) wouldn't pulling stale air out of every room be best for air quality?
3) can I have the best of both worlds, keep my ERV for the bathroom fans and keep it setup as is, and install an additional HRV to pull air out of every room, and supply clean air to every room using the cold air return and supplies of my furnace somehow?
3.2) if I can use both, can I duct it to the existing exhaust and intake the ERV uses and use that ducting for both systems?
Just to let everyone know, I would hire a pro to install etc, but wanted to check with you all and see what your thoughts are.
