Good morning,
I am beginning to look more into maintaining my home, and noticed that the return air duct was not physically connected to the air blower compartment. Not quite sure if it shows well on the photo, but it's about a centimeter gap between the duct and the side of the compartment. There is a gas water heater in the same enclosed room, which is my concern, as the return air should may be pulling the air through this gap.
I am not comfortable with moving the furnace, and looks to be bolted at places to the vents, possibly for stability. Would patching the gap from the inside of the blower compartment with mastic/tape or some form of board to eliminate the gap and make it more air tight be a good solution? I am unable to reach the outside, as it is situated in a corner, and there is little space between the wall and the side of the furnace.
Thank you very much for your time.
