I'm currently in a 1700 sq. foot ranch in Long Island NY. For several reasons, I am looking to seeing if it makes sense to replace my current heating system (and CAC) with a cold climate heat pump. I currently have a oil fired boiler and a hydro air system, which was pieced together sloppily after a slab leak many years ago. CAC is an old Kenmore 3 ton unit. Reasons for looking into a heat pump include taking advantage of utility rebates while they are still available, upgrading the central air which will have to be done in the next few years, reduce or completely eliminate noisy oil burner (in a utility room in our Den which is a converted garage), and to take advantage of excess solar production to offset heating cost (at least for the short term). Ductwork is a complete rip and replace, so assume that the ductwork will be properly sized with whatever system I choose.
I've had five contractors come out, and each one recommended the Bosch IDS 2.0 inverter heat pump/air handler combo. Four of the five recommended the 5 ton outdoor unit (BOVA-60HDN1-M20G) and the 4 ton air handler (BVA-48WN1-M20). One contractor recommended the 5 ton outdoor unit and the 5 ton air handler (BVA-60WN1-M20) to get extra capacity for heating. I know it is bad to oversize. However, with these modulating Bosch units, do the same rules apply? What downsides would there be if I went with a 5 ton system? Goal would to eventually go 100% electric (with electric backup). Is anyone running these standalone in a moderately cold climate without a dual fuel setup? Our coldest month average low is 23F, and usually the coldest it gets is in the teens at night. It very rarely gets to single digits, and if it does, it is only for a day or two each year.
