I have a contractor coming to re-line the flue for our oil-fired steam boiler and I am concerned that they will not install the correct size for our model (Weil-McLain SGO-5). The manual for the boiler says the minimum chimney size is 7" diameter (or 8"x8", which is what we have now), but I did not see breaking out of the existing terracotta flue liner explicitly stated in the contract, nor was it mentioned during any of our discussions, so I'm worried that they will just put a 6" liner in and call it a day. Will a 6" flue liner work in this application? Or do I really need the 7"?
Some background: A chimney inspector determined that re-lining of the flue is required due to "Misaligned Tile/Separation/Gaps" according to their report. I had several contractors come to give me quotes and they all told me different things, so I'm not sure who to trust. This is an interior brick masonry chimney about 40' tall and the flue is not shared with any other appliances. The house was built in 1904.
