I live on the west coast, and the fire season this year has been bad. Very smokey.
I own a Carrier 58sta/stx gas furnace, and had previously just replaced the 1 inch thick filter with the exact same filter periodically. But this season, I did notice that the box that the filter slides into, is 4 inches think. The installers just blocked off 3 inches of the width with an easily removable metal bar. So I removed it, and put in a 4 inch merv 16 filter to help with the smoke.
Later, a friend of mine mentioned that he's heard of people doing that, and burning out their blower, because it wasn't designed for that thick of a filter. I called the people that installed it, and (although I think it was a receptionist, not the actual technician that installed it) she thought it would be OK since the filter box is 4 inches wide. The air flow seems the same as before in all rooms.
So, do you think its safe/ok to keep the 4 inch wide merv 16 filter in my 58sta?
thanks,
Jason
