unusual boiler piping

I was replacing a boiler feed valve for a friend, and I realized that the circulators on the return side of the boiler were pumping away from the boiler to the loop and the return was to the top of the boiler. It is a three-zone boiler. (Three circulators and three flow control valves) The flow control valves are on the top of the boiler pointing towards the boiler. I am a retired oil burner tech and have never seen this before. Is there a logical reason for this configuration?
