1964 R12 Compressor Replacement or Retrofit

Hello,

I am seeking help with my 1964 GE Spacemaker refrigerator compressor. The motor coils are fried so it needs a new compressor. I have talked to numerous repair places and have been told that R12-compatible compressors are no longer manufactured since the pandemic (?), so I would have to retrofit a new R134a model. Unfortunately, on the west coast, I have not found anyone who can help with this job. The main problem has been compressor shortages.

I found one place that had the ability to do the job and looked at the fridge, but because the new compressor would have stuck out of the back of the refrigerator a little bit (not a problem for me in terms of space), it would have required a custom bracket. Although I could have fabricated/installed it myself, they did not want to invest the time with the bracket or in flushing the system unless they could find an original R12 compressor (charged with Hot Shot) that would just fit in place.

The compressor housing is 7.5 inches high, 6 inches deep, and 15.75 inches wide. It was a 1/3 HP motor with approximately 800 BTU cooling capacity. It had a hot gas defrost reversing valve as well, but this is not critical. It could be omitted in a retrofit job.

I have seen these conversions done before in this exact refrigerator using Whirlpool compressors, but I do not have the experience or refrigeration tools to do this job myself. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Matthew
