Contractor is installing a new 4-ton Amana 18 seer outdoor unit. They want to use a 7/8" suction line but I looked up the Amana instructions and they specify 1-1/8" for 50-79ft lengths.
Info
Lineset length 65ft
Indoor unit is in the attic, outdoor unit sits on the ground. Vertical difference: evaporator ~14ft above condenser
According to Amana's Recommended Interconnecting Tubing chart: 50-79ft specifies 1-1/8", 25-49ft specifies 1-1/8". Only 0-24ft length shows 7/8" for the suction line. A friend who does HVAC but is too busy to do the install says 7/8" is fine. Even the supply house told me 7/8" is fine.
Am I overthinking this? If we're talking about a 1-5% efficiency drop I don't mind. If we're talking about a premature compressor failure that isn't covered by Amana's warranty because the lineset was the wrong size I do mind.
Thanks for the help - I've seen several topics regarding this 7/8 vs 1-1/8 debate but none seemed to be the exact scenario of over 60ft + evap above condenser.
