Please help identify the weird anomaly causing our AC to break down once a year!
I have a Carrier model 24APB660A0030010 condenser (5 ton) and has an ECM 142R fan. The lineset is likely around 35 eet long. I had this unit installed less than two years ago along with new lines and heater. Less than a year after installation, the AC stopped working and warm air was being blown in the house. I turned the AC off and waited 3 days for the installation company to send a tech to look at situation and give us a warranty repair. The tech arrived, he turned on the unit and he said 'the compressor does not sound right at all' and that 'the pressure sounds low.' He then pulled the power off at the breaker box and put it back on. After that everything sounded fine to him. He took pressure measurements, checked temp differentials, checked fan and fins for blockage and said everything looked fine. AC was blowing cold air in the house and everything was fine, until a year later.
Fast forward almost exactly a year to the day of the first incident. The AC stopped blowing cold air into the house again, only warm air was coming in. I went outside and felt the line going into the condenser unit and it was warm (instead of being usually cold). I turned the AC off and on at the thermostat...still warm air. I then turned the condenser off and on at the breaker box and still did not get cold air. I turned the AC off waited 24 hrs then turned it back on and everything was running fine and we had cold air again. A Tech from the installation company came again in 3 days for a warranty repair and could not find anything wrong. He mainly checked filter and fins for blockages, tested voltages, pressures, see if the safety water level switch was working and did not find anything wrong.
My first question to this forum is: what do you think is happening these two years in a row for a newly installed unit and what do you think I should ask to have done for a warranty repair so it won't happen again? I would not be surprised if this happened once a year around the same time and never getting resolution and possibly have something worse happen down the road when no longer under warranty.
Also, both techs recommended having a hard start kit installed to give the compressor a little more help starting. Is this something folks on this forum would recommend doing as well for this relatively new (<2 years old) system?
