In 2018 my wife and I built a custom home with a family friend who holds a GC license. We contracted with a company to draw up our AC and Duct plans so we could compare bids for identical work. The calc guy heard our requests and suggested a 5 zone Mitsubishi City Multi with ducted splits. This is a 3400 sq foot single story home with CBS and spray foam insulation in a Hot and Humid climate. We have a mechanical closet that always needs conditioning and a MIL suite with its own thermostat, we also wanted to be able to shut down parts of the house when our kids or family were away.
Our design guy told us we need special installers and set us up with a company. About three weeks before we needed them, the installers withdrew from the job. So in a scramble we hired a team who told us they were Mitsubishi Diamond Dealers and had the training to install this system. However by the conclusion of the install I had more concerns than I had confidence.
We had start-up drama (not accounting for line sets in refrigerant calcs.) however a call to Mits and some time with their techs and everything got resolved and the system performed well for the last few years.
Approximately 6 months after install, when I hadn't received back the warranty card we sent in, I called Mits and inquired. It was then I was informed that my system can only be registered by the dealer and my dealer was not in the system. For the sake of time we won't go into the fact another Mitsubishi DD came out, inspected the system, and told me the installation looked good or that I have a scan of the warranty card I sent in to Mitsubishi or that the house only has had a Certificate of Occupancy for 4 years. I have no warranty. My AC thereafter became like "Fight Club" the movie, something we don't talk about.
Fast forward to about 4 months ago and our system was having problems cooling. I called another Mitsubishi DD and they came across as being much more knowledgeable, they quickly pointed out that the system was installed wrong. There were no refrigerant shut offs to each Split, each split was attic floor mounted and not hung making it impossible to work on them. Then we discovered we had a leak in every unit in the attic. So now I have a 4 year old Mits with all five zones leaking and no warranty, since no start up procedures were implemented. A proposal was made to add a dehumidifier or two, not sure how that's going to work and send coils off to be coated before reinstalling and bringing them up to spec. Speculation was made that the coils were eaten by the VOC's from the spray foam thus the request for the Dehumidifier.
Given this group's knowledge I wanted to gather opinions on its repair and possible replacement.
Not sure if I should go full Kenny Rogers "Gambler" on this or not.
