Our old r22 AC died last week, so we went ahead and had an entirely new system installed yesterday. The sales guy said they'd put in a 4" filter rack, which I was happy about.
Cue the installation yesterday. All finished up, I went to check it out... 1" filter rack. When I asked the tech about it, he said there wasn't enough room to fit a 4" rack because the old chimney is too close.
Was he B.S.ing me? There's 7" between the furnace and the return drop, and nearly 4" gap between the return drop and the chimney. Could a competent tech fit a 4" rack in there properly? (photo of spacing attached)
---
PS I'm not impressed with other aspects of the install either forgot to install the thermostat, and when he came back out this morning he installed the wrong one (specific t-stat was listed in my contract). And there are air leaks all over the air handler where he didn't seal it well (tape popping off, and no sealing around the condensate drain lines at all). So I'm not convinced he wasn't just avoiding doing more work to correct a mistake.
