I think lightening took out the outdoor thermostat on our Rheem Dual Fuel unit. My inside thermostat is now showing the message "Outdoor Sensor Fault". The exterior thermostat is part of the Ruud Air RXPFF01 Fossil Fuel Kit; which has been discontinued. The other night, I ran across a Ruud article that suggested replacing the thermostat with 6 listed thermostats. It said nothing about the outside thermostat. I'm trying to figure out my options here. I can't find the parts anywhere. I'm not sure if I can just replace the external thermostat without replacing the entire Fossil Fuel Kit. My current RC-2000 thermostat will support dual fuel systems, but builder/installer said the Fossil Fuel Kit was better to use, so that is the method we went with.
I know I'm out of my league here, but due to past history with the initial installer, I have stopped using that company. They also forgot to register my units and the 5 year warranty has passed. Yes, I have had other issues but that's a completely different soap box. There are two more Rheem partners in the area, but they are commercial contractors. The guy I'm using now will work on our system and service them. But doesn't really support the Rheem specific stuff. I wouldn't mind replacing the inside thermostat, but what I've read on most is they require a wire to an external thermostat somewhere to be ran. knowing the position of the thermostat in the house, that is going to be a pain because the wire will need to run between two floors to the exterior wall.
I guess what I'm wondering is instead of replacing the entire Fossil Fuel Kit, is it possible to just replace the exterior thermostat? What questions should I be asking the HVAC guy or options should I be looking at?
