Good evening everyone.
I got home today and the house was 85 deg with the furnace fan running, but the outside condenser was off. I opened the access panel on the condenser and the contractor was not pulled in, checked and verified I had 24v coming from the inside unit. After tracing wires, there are two pressure cutoff switches wired in series with the contractor, one on the liquid line and one on the suction line. When I gave the suction line pressure switch a tap, the contractor sucked in and the ac was running again.
I have a tech scheduled, but they are several days out. That is totally understandable at this time of year, Im just glad they added me to their list. My question is what would cause this? Obviously I would think of low refrigerant as that is the purpose I assume of the device based on its name. However, why would tapping it reset it? If I do in fact have a charge issue, why would it let me reset it? If it potentially isnt a charge issue, do these things have any chance of failing? I have my fingers crossed it wont happen again. Could it be a fluke because of the 106 outside temp today, or just foreshadowing a real issue that is creeping up.
I clean the condenser at least twice a year, we have lovely cottonwood trees that will clog up the condenser in a few days when they are in season, so I make sure it is clean and working the best I can without the tools and knowledge all of you have. The air filter was replaced a few days ago, no sign of anything freezing up either inside or outside. Capacitor isnt swelled and the unit sounds the same it always has.
Just looking for advice on what I will be up against. I also dont want a tech to come out and it not happen to them and they brush it off as a fluke. I am sure most techs would dig into it more, just want to have a little background info of what could have caused this if they dont find anything.
Thanks everyone!
Paul
