I'll start with the short version directly below.
8-1-2016 new Trane package unit. $8,000
2017-2020 service calls and misc. $1,000
2019 Upgrade some duct work $2,000
1-2021 Another new unit.Free but labor $2,800
Thermostat $300
New Evap coil and TXV. labor only $1,900
Ductwork $3,000
$19,000 and still no AC. They want another $2,200 for just the labor to put in another compressor.
Long version.
About 6 years ago my in-laws paid about $8,000 for a new 2 ton Trane package unit. It worked ok but not great and it was eventually recommended that hey have some of the ductwork upgraded so they had it done 3 years ago. Not sure if this helped much as things eventually kept going south and they had it worked on about 5 or 6 times but couldn't ever get it working like it should. They called and complained to Trane and they said they would replace the unit for free. My in-laws were happy to hear this and went with another company to install.
So a Trane distributor came out put a brand new 2 ton package unit for free 18 months ago and they paid $2,800 to have it installed. Within 6 months it seemed like it wasn't working too well. At 14 months it was no longer cooling at all. I finally got involved and had the company that installed the unit come out and they said $2,000 for a new TXV valve. Got a second opinion and he charged them $300 for a new thermostat that didn't do anything. Got a third opinion from the "best" company in town and the tech was there for 5 hours mostly talking with Trane corporate office because as he said "this just doesn't make sense". I tried not to bother the guy but I finally asked if the ductwork had anything do with the problem. He decided to take a look and was floored as to how bad some of the duct work was. On the return side there was only 2 rounds coming from the filter and they merged in a box that had a 12" flex going into the unit but it was way too loose and kinked. Before he left Trane got back to him and said the EVAP coil and the TXV valve needed to be replaced. He explained that the EVAP coil was flooded and the compressor kept working to push the freon through but it no longer could do it. I asked if the compressor would be damaged as well and he said we will worry about that later. Went ahead and scheduled this to be done for $1,900 labor. Also scheduled another guy with the same company to come and give an estimate for the ductwork and he did a pressure test and the return side was like 3 times greater (or lesser) than it should be and the supply side 2 times greater (or lesser) than it should be. Paid another $3,000 to have the ductwork modified. Paid $1,900 to have the EVAP coil and TXV valve replaced and it is only cooling 3 degrees. He said the compressor is bad as well but the "good news it's under warranty as well." He gives me a quote for $2,200 for just the labor.
So they have spent $19,000 and still don't have AC.
I feel like I should be blaming the company that installed the unit 18 months ago for not checking the ductwork. I also feel like the most recent company shouldn't be asking for another $2,200 for the compressor.
What if we pay the $2,200 and it still doesn't work?
Someone please provide some insight or advice. It would be greatly appreciated.
